Looking up Slagle, WV. hollow.

This page is dedicated to the memories of a
place known as "Rum Creek".

The photo above was taken in April 2000.
The scene is looking toward Slagle Hollow.
Slagle used to be a booming little neighborhood.

Rum Creek started at the mouth of the hollow which
was called Rum Junction. Then you proceeded to go to
the following towns: Dabney, Macbeth or Hutchinson,
Orville, Cham, Argyle, Yolyn and Slagle.

Dehue was on the right fork of the hollow,
so, I am not sure if it was considered being
on Rum Creek or not.
Rum Creek got its name, so the story goes, by
someone breaking up the bottles of rum, made by
boot-leggers, and the rum ran into the creek.

Not very many people live on Rum Creek today.
My father and mother, Roy and Mamie Smith, and
my brothers and sisters, lived at Yolyn for a while
before w moved to Slagle.

My family moved to Slagle around 1950.
My sisters, Linda, Sharon and Mary, (myself),
attended Slagle Grade School thru the sixth grade.

Some of the teachers that I had in school were:
Mrs. Martha Williams, Ms. White,
Ms. Shanklin and Ms. Connors.

Some of the happiest times in our lives was
while we lived at Slagle. We had to walk
to school everyday, rain, snow or sleet !!!!

I can remember one time when it was so cold
outside and I had to walk to school.
A couple of kids and myself got to school
early and the janitor wasn't there to open the doors.
So, we found a window open and we climbed
through and got inside. When Ms. White, our teacher
got to school, we sure did get a paddling.
It broke my heart more than it hurt my rear.

That was the good old days!! I finished grades
one thru six at Slagle Grade School.

We moved from Slagle in about
1963 to Stollings.
It is so sad to go back there today and
see that nothing exists there anymore, but the land.
There are no houses there today and
I don't think Slagle is on the map anymore.

Music: SLAGLE HOLLAR

The song playing was written and recorded about
5 years for Frank & Violet Johnson by Bob Dorsey,
a member of Tom T. Halls band.
Frank & Vi were kind enough to send me a
copy of the tape and to let me use it on my website.

THANK YOU FRANK & VI.
